Claire to Dream – Super Mum raises more than £10k for family of best friend after cancer death

An inspirational Warwickshire Mum has completed the Raceways Virtual Leamington Spa Half Marathon and has raised more than £10,000 for the family of a lifelong best friend who passed away from stomach cancer.

Heroic Claire Moulson from Alcester, Warwickshire, ran 21.1km on October 18th in memory of Sharne Phipps – with all money raised going to the family she left behind; husband Richard and children Grace (12) and Finn (3).

‘I’m so proud to have done it for Sharne, she was my rock, a wonderful girl, a devoted wife and a brilliant Mum who loved her life. We knew each other for more than 35 years, and her death has left a huge hole for her lovely family and friends. I‘m so grateful to the many people who donated money to the cause, it really is incredibly moving,’ said Claire.

‘Sharne and I both went to St Faith’s, which is now St Nicholas primary school, and then on to Alcester High school, and we enjoyed so many great times through our childhoods, through our teenage years and then as adults trying to make our way in the world.

‘Sharne was diagnosed in February, not long before lockdown, and initially given nine to 12 months to live. But she became very ill much sooner, and she passed away early in August. She never smoked, wasn’t a drinker, was a fit woman who took good care of herself. It’s so utterly unfair.

‘Her children have been incredible, especially Grace who is so, so strong. When something like this does happen, it does make you reflect not only on the things you have and the people in your life, but also the great times you had with friends like Sharne,’ she added.

Claire ran a route around Alcester and the surrounding area on October 18th, the date the race was due to take place, completing the distance in an incredible time of two hours 10 minutes, cheered on by friends and family along the course and at the finish line – socially-distanced, naturally.

‘When I heard the Alcester 10k had been cancelled, I was so worried I wouldn’t be able to run the Half in memory of Sharne, so I contacted Raceways and asked if a virtual race was a possibility. I’m so pleased it was. She was always there for me when I needed her, so this is very least I can do to help provide for her wonderful family,’ said Claire.

‘Originally I was aiming for £500, and had hoped that Sharne, Richard and the kids could have had some lovely days out together. Sadly, she died before the day of the race, but hopefully the money raised will help provide some security,’ she added.

Raceways was set up to help people support and fundraise for national running charity Marathon Kids (formerly Kids Run Free, meaning the money generated by the Alcester 10km, the Leamington Spa Half Marathon and the Warwick Reindeer Run funds free running opportunities for hundreds of thousands of children in schools and parks across the UK.
